On Sunday, Sept 17th, The Vanderbilt Cup Races (re-creation) took place at
the Nassau County Museum Of Arts in Roslyn Harbor, on it's 145 acre site.
Timed Exhibition Runs took place for cars with a racing heritage. A 6/10 mile
track was set up. Many foreign sports cars attend, and yes, one 1961
Cadillac conv, weighing almost 5,000 lbs. owned by our Club member Mike
& Joan Conforti. Marie and I arrived with the 91 Allante in the afternoon.
Some how there are 2- Cadillacs on the field.
Mike told me that he raced the Cadillac earlier and asked if I wanted to ride
with him on another run. So off we go to the starting line, of course with the
top down. I could not get Mike to power brake the car, by he did burn some
rubber. Down the track we go with spectators yelling, Go Caddy, Go Caddy.
It brought back fond memories of my drag racing days in the 60's, on
Crossbay Blvd. in Howard Beach, Queens. Mike's 61 Cadillac received a
award plaque in it's class. It was a real fun day.
